The “Mecca of the motorcycling world” hosts 67th bike week By Astrid Bidanec The 67th Black Hills Motorcycle Rally, better known as Sturgis Bike Week, takes place Aug.6-12th, 2007 in Sturgis, S.D. and offers a great variety of activities for any motorcycle enthusiast, as well as beautiful scenery. From rock concerts to bike races and motorcycle stunts, Sturgis lures bikers from all across the U.S. to its hidden treasures and is touted as one of the main events in the national motorcycle world.
For six days bikers and their pillion riders can participate in motorcycle rallies, races, beauty contests, and cruiser gatherings. Newbies and the faint of heart, on the other hand, have the choice to simply shop till they drop or enjoy a few good tunes at any of the music events planned. Since the schedule is subject to change, all bike week visitors should be equipped with a flexible attitude. What started as a local fun event in 1938 has grown into a huge commercial opportunity for vendors and local business owners. It comes at no surprise that the town of Sturgis has dedicated an entire website to the all-year-round promotion of the Black Hills Motorcycle Rally, www.sturgisbikeweek.com. Bikers traveling across the U.S. can make lodging reservations and learn all about Sturgis long in advance. Regardless of the hype, all bikers have to obey the local laws. It would certainly be a good idea to check out the South Dakota Motorcycle Driving Laws posted on the website cited above before heading to Sturgis. The local law enforcement does not give bikers a free pass in honor of bike week. Motorcycle enthusiasts compare attending Sturgis Bike Week to a pilgrimage to Mecca, a once-in-a-lifetime event, and a must for any motorcycle lover.
